- June 16, 2019, 20:30
- Bucharest Metro Stations
In the lead up to Bloomsday, the Embassy of Ireland and RIBA are displaying posters in a number of Metro Stations encouraging Bucharest’s commuters to discover Irish writer James Joyce.
Bloomsday is the annual celebration of Joyce’s modernist epic – Ulysses – about fictional events that took place in Dublin on 16 June 1904. The name is inspired by the book’s main character, Leopold Bloom. The first celebration of Bloomsday in Dublin took place in 1954 and was organised by a group of well-known Dublin literary and cultural figures. Since then, Bloomsday has developed into a colourful and diverse celebration of Joyce and Ulysses. Many people celebrate Bloomsday by dressing in the fashion of the period, eating the types of un-appetising food mentioned in the book, performing readings from the Ulysses text and visiting the locations in Dublin where the novel was set – especially the Martello Tower in Sandycove, Sweny’s Chemist on Lincoln Place, Glasnevin Cemetery and Davy Byrne’s Pub on Duke Street. Why not visit Dublin and see the sites for yourself?
